Sno Camp pre-ski training
You’ve booked it. The resort is chocolate box beautiful, encased in powdery snow (hopefully) and exciting apres ski. You’ve got the jacket, the salopettes and those awesome wraparounds. But hold it right there! This is a holiday, where you’ll be spending all day, every day giving your body a serious work out. Fear not, there are some very simple exercises to get you prepared so it’ll all be downhill.
Olympic Skier, Snowboarder and Virgin Active member Lesley Mckenna knows a thing or two about getting ready for a snow holiday:
"It’s important you don’t just climb up a mountain having done nothing. After the first couple of days you’ll be so tired and sore you won’t get the most out of being there. And that’s a real shame when you’ve saved up and looked forward to it for months. Good preparation is everything."
Lesley's Alpine Advice
1. HOW LONG YOU GOT?
Start training a minimum of eight weeks before your holiday and even longer if you can. You’ll benefit by being able to spend more time on the slopes and less time seeking sympathy for sore and aching limbs.
2. BASE CAMP
Increasing your base level of fitness will have a fabulous effect on your body. But don't rush. Take it steady and build at your own pace.
3. GIVE PECS A CHANCE
Pain is so last season. Little and often is best. It will make your body strong, flexible and ready to learn new things.
4. ACHIEVABLE GOALS
Aim too high and you’ll get dispirited, too low and you won’t be challenged. Even top class athletes set realistic goals in order to progress.
5. STEPPIN' OUT
One step at a time otherwise it's burn out time and you'll be languishing in a pool of aching muscles. If you train hard one day, make the next session easier. Give your body a chance to recover.
