HULA COMES TO VIRGIN ACTIVE |
 |
February 2007
It's time to reintroduce you to an old friend: the Hula Hoop. Remember those youthful summer days when exercise was something you did just for fun? Who says you ever have to grow up?
Hulaerobics™ is the latest exercise innovation to hit the UK and is poised to tone, firm and add a little swing to your hips this year. Unique to Virgin Active and its 72 clubs across the UK, the Hulaerobics™ workout was developed in conjunction with Californian Hula-guru Christabel Zamor, and launched in partnership with London's Heart FM.
This exciting new group exercise workout involving – yes, you guessed it – that cool, big ring you played with as a kid, is now in full swing at various Virgin Active clubs nationwide.
Hulaerobics™ is a total body aerobic and sculpting workout that incorporates dance-style moves to cater for beginner & advanced Hula Hoopers of all ages alike.

The workout can also improve strength and cardio ability. In order to get you moving and rolling in style, we brought world-renowned Hoop girl Christabel over in December last year to work closely with fitness instructors from various Virgin Active clubs. Now experts themselves, they're ready to pass on the moves in this 30 minute class format.
It's all in the hoop
Although the traditional Hula Hoop became a phenomenon in the 1980s, Virgin Active has turned
what was previously perceived as a toy, into a professional piece of sporting equipment. The
Virgin Active Hulaerobics™ Hula Hoop weighs 1 lb 7.5 oz and is 90cm in diameter. This all makes
for an easier hula experience as the weight, combined with the material used, helps to grip your
waist for a more successful workout.
Did you know?
- The average amount of calories burned during each session of Hulaerobics™ is 100 calories per 10 minutes - although this of course varies depending on age, ability and effort level.
- In ancient Greece, hoops made from grapevines were propelled around the waist and limbs to encourage weight loss.
- Hula works out the stomach, hips and buttocks and also helps improve flexibility, strength, co-ordination and core stability.
