What is Body Mass Index?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a rough guide to checking if an adult’s weight is in the healthy range according to age, gender and height.
What’s a healthy range?
Medical research recommends a body mass index between 20 and 25 for optimum health. The World Health Organisation classifies a BMI of 25 to 30 as overweight and over 30 as obese.
A word of caution
BMI is a rough guide only. It can’t distinguish between fat or muscle so doesn't allow for body type. So, if you are pregnant or have a large amount of muscle mass your BMI result will be less reliable.
