I had always known about the benefits of sports massage. As an elite level physiotherapist, working in pro cricket, rugby and the 2000 and 2012 Olympics, I saw how it was complimenting rehabilitation incredibly well. Athletes were recovering from injuries faster and maintaining their optimal performance.

However, it wasn’t until I myself started to have frequent sports massage that I began to appreciate what it could do for anybody

I was in my mid-30s and starting to get reoccurring injuries, muscle soreness stiffness after training. I decided to treat my joints and muscles like I would my fitness and health and have never looked back.

Techniques known as effleurage (long strokes), deep tissue massage and kneading are very different to the typical ‘spa type of massage’ – and to think these techniques are just for athletes is simply a myth. We can all benefit from reducing the risk of injury, improving recovery and helping to quickly drain the lactic acid and other toxins which can build after heavy training.

Professional Sportspeople love it, at London 2012 sports massage accounted for 36% of treatment provided to athletes – the most popular therapy. But we now all have access to that same quality of treatment.
