Hang in there...
Modern acupuncture offers therapeutic and preventative treatment based on thousands of years of complementary medicine. Feel the benefits of release from headaches, joint pain and many common health problems.
What is acupuncture?
Delivered by our Chartered Physiotherapists, acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin. It has been used in China for over 2,000 years and increasingly in Western medicine since the 1970s.
How it works
Acupuncture blocks out pain signals by stimulating nerve fibres and helps reduce the sensitivity of tender points in the body. It does this by stimulating the body to produce endorphins and oxytocin, its own pain and stress relieving chemicals. Additionally it promotes sleep by stimulating the release of melatonin in the body and encourages a sense of well-being by releasing serotonin.
The benefits of acupuncture
It can help to relieve specific aches and pains, such as lower back and neck pain, headaches, osteoarthritis tight muscles. It can also help if bodily functions are out of balance, and many people have regular treatments because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on you, your condition and your physiotherapist’s assessment. Often physiotherapists use acupuncture in combination with other treatments such as massage and physiotherapy. Most patients receive a course of 4-6 treatments although just one or two treatments may be enough.
