It includes a person’s ability to manage stress. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals such as dopamine and endorphins that make you feel happy. Exercise also helps your brain get rid of chemicals that make you feel stressed and anxious and can help you control feelings of anger or sadness.

Scientists have found that exercise leads to neurogenesis, or the growth of new brain cells (CNBC, National Library of Medicine). This improves cognitive function, learning and memory, as well as allowing the brain cells to communicate better with each other.

The more work you put into your brain, the stronger it gets. Regular exercise can increase the size of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex which can both play a part in dementia or Alzheimer’s. While exercising isn’t the cure to completely stop brain aging, doing it regularly can help reduce or delay the onset.

Every time you move your body, sensory receptors in your muscles, tendons, and joints send information to your brain about what is happening.
