What is a sound bath?
You’ve probably guessed that sound baths have very little to do with water, but that may not have gotten you any closer to understanding what they are. Let us explain.
A sound bath is a form of sound healing, using designated frequencies to tap into your body’s energy centres. The sound can come from a variety of instruments, though it’s usually played by crystal or Tibetan singing bowls, flutes or drums. The practice is believed to put you in a state of deep relaxation, restore your energy and realign your chakras since each vibration within the sound bath connects on the same frequency as one of your seven chakras.
You’ll most often find sound bath classes in holistic health centres or in wellness spaces, like Virgin Active.
Is a sound bath the same as a gong bath?
It’s quite common for people to think that a sound bath and a gong bath are the same thing. They can both be taught in a class format and are both forms of sound healing with the same vibrational benefits. The key difference is that a sound bath can be performed with different types of instruments, while a gong bath is only ever played with a series of gongs.
Is a sound bath meditation?
If you’re looking for a way to meditate that’s a little different from sitting alone, cross-legged in your bedroom, then you’re in luck. Sound Bath is a form of meditation and the Sound Bath sessions at Virgin Active usually start with a guided meditation to ground you throughout the session. Having this visual or repeating a mantra is a similar practice to what you can expect in your personal meditation practice.
What are the benefits of a sound bath?
A 45 minute Sound Bath offers lots of benefits. Lying in stillness while the sound waves wash over you, you can expect to feel a sense of deep relaxation.
Guided by your instructor, you’ll begin with an opening pose, followed by a meditation or mantra before you’re encouraged to relax. We’re all about promoting guilt-free napping so you absolutely have the permission to use our classes to relax in your own way.
Because of how relaxed you’ll feel, you may also find that a Sound Bath class helps you to reduce your stress and brings about a sense of inner peace.
As well as the calming benefits, Sound Bath can have a lot of deeper benefits too, like allowing you to feel more connected and self-aware.
